Macedonia Completes First National Hydrogen Study: A Step Toward Europe's Energy Future

The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources has successfully completed Macedonia's first comprehensive Hydrogen Study — a strategic document that opens the door to the future hydrogen economy and positions the country as part of Europe's energy future.

Backed by the European Union

The study was produced with technical assistance funded by the European Union through the IPA II programme, within the framework of the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) and Infrastructure Project Facility 10 (IPF10), as part of the gas interconnection project between Macedonia and Serbia. It is proof that the country isn't waiting — it is already actively building the infrastructure for the energy of the future.

The First Document of Its Kind in the Region

This is the first national document to comprehensively analyze the possibilities for producing, transporting, storing and using green hydrogen — one of the key energy carriers of the future, across energy, industry, transport and district heating systems. With this, Macedonia joins the rare group of countries in the region that already have a national strategic analysis for developing the hydrogen sector — a significant advantage in the energy transition process.

A Step Toward Decarbonisation

Producing the study is another confirmation of the Ministry's commitment to accelerating the energy transition, decarbonizing the energy sector, and building a modern, sustainable and competitive energy system. As a candidate country for EU membership, Macedonia continues to actively align its energy policies with European regulations, aiming for greater energy security, new investments and long-term sustainable development.

With this step, Macedonia is no longer just following Europe's path toward green energy — it is also helping to draw the map of the continent's future hydrogen network.
